Seeking addiction treatment can feel overwhelming as there are so many programs and options available. Substance addiction in itself is frustrating and difficult to overcome alone. Getting the help you need can be easier than you think. Finding the right substance abuse treatment starts with learning more about what to expect and speaking with medical professionals about your addiction treatment options.

The Addiction Treatment Process

Alcohol or drug addiction treatment starts with going through the detox process to eliminate any substances from the system. Although medical detox programs are not available at our facility, our specialists can recommend esteemed clinics that provide this essential treatment. Once the body is free from toxic substances, an individual can move to one of our substance abuse treatment programs.

Before choosing a treatment program, you’ll discuss treatment options with an addiction treatment specialist to determine the best program. Understanding how to treat drug abuse relies on uncovering a variety of factors. An admissions specialist will most likely ask questions and review testing that revolves around the following questions:

  • How long has the individual been suffering from substance abuse? Is it considered chronic addiction?
  • Has the individual attended a substance abuse treatment program in the past?
  • Does the individual have co-occurring disorders like mental health conditions?
  • What substances is the individual addicted to?
  • How severe is the substance use disorder?
  • Are they suffering from drug or alcohol abuse that involves several substances?
  • Does the individual suffer from any other chronic medical conditions that need to be considered?
  • What is the age and gender of the individual seeking addiction treatment?
  • Does the individual have daily responsibilities that force them to utilize outpatient programs as a form of treatment?
  • Does their insurance coverage limit the type of treatment programs they can seek?

Regardless of a person’s current circumstances as it pertains to insurance coverage or daily responsibilities, the best chance for substance abuse recovery is to enroll in a program that will ultimately keep someone from relapsing. Substance abuse services are most effective when they are tailored to individual circumstances. Treating substance abuse is difficult enough on its own so getting the help you need is only half the challenge.

Medication-Assisted Therapy

Drug addiction in the United States is a growing problem. Opioids are among some of the most abused drugs in the nation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that nearly 2.1 million people in the country suffered from opioid use disorder in 2016. Another common problem the country faces is mental health disorders.

What do these two issues have in common? Both are commonly treated with medication-assisted treatment or medication assisted therapy (MAT services). Detox and rehab centers across the country, including Lifetime Recovery, have started taking advantage of addiction medicine as an effective way of caring for people with certain addictions. With that said, what does MAT involve, and is it effective? Studies have found that there are many benefits of choosing MAT over traditional treatment practices alone.

At Lifetime Recovery in Mullica Hill, NJ, we specialize in helping individuals with mental illness and substance use disorders (dual diagnosis treatment), including opioids such as heroin, by utilizing a form of detox known as medication-assisted treatment.

Partial Hospitalization Program

When recovering from an addiction or a co-occurring mental health disorder, there is no single appropriate solution. Everyone is unique, and the nature of addictions and mental health disorders can vary widely. As a result, rehab patients need to consider treatment options carefully. Rehab patients should also seek the help of experienced medical professionals. That way, they can ensure that they choose treatment options that are most likely to yield success. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is one of the treatment options that patients recovering from addictions, and any co-occurring mental health disorders can choose from.

A hospitalization program is the most intense outpatient substance abuse treatment. This is because partial hospitalization provides individuals with addiction treatment services for five to eight hours a day, five to seven days a week.

When not at the rehab center, hospitalization program patients can spend their time living in their own homes and tending to their normal life responsibilities. If you are looking to overcome a severe addiction while minimizing disruptions to your life, you should consider how PHP’s partial hospitalization program could benefit you.

Standard Outpatient Treatment

When it comes to treatment for a substance abuse problem, there are several different options out there. Not everyone responds to the same type of substance abuse treatment; therefore, there are multiple options out there so that everyone can get help and get help in a way that is most beneficial to them.

If you have read up on substance abuse treatment at all, you have likely seen inpatient treatment mentioned all over the place. That’s because it’s the most common form of treatment available today. Inpatient treatment requires that the person entering treatment live at the facility for the duration of treatment.

It is often recommended for those suffering from a very severe addiction, those addicted to substances that require constant care handling the detox and withdrawal symptoms, or those that don’t have a supportive home environment to live in while undergoing treatment.

The other popular treatment option is outpatient rehab, which we will discuss on this page. We will look at what outpatient treatment is, and how it can help those suffering from addiction without uprooting their lives. The benefits of outpatient addiction treatment compared to some of the other treatment options.

Gambling Addiction Treatment Program

While gambling addiction may seem like it differs from substance abuse, it’s actually similar in the way that the brain is stimulated by the activity. While any individual may not be suffering from “withdrawal symptoms” from not gambling, they are dealing with similar psychological addiction symptoms.

A treatment program for gambling is actually structured in a similar manner to help break free from this behavioral addiction. Clients enrolled in this program will attend individual and group therapy to help work through underlying issues surrounding the addiction. A gambling treatment program helps individuals restructure their way of thinking to help them overcome this process of addiction.

Behavioral Therapies Available in Substance Abuse Treatment

Common types of therapy available in substance abuse treatment include:

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a private and convenient solution that allows individuals to discuss feelings and thoughts with a therapist. Treatment centers utilize individual therapy to help people open up and address these emotions so they can process them. The recovery process requires working through a lot of difficult emotions that have been repressed for some time.

Group Therapy

Group counseling is an environment where individuals in a treatment program all take turns discussing their experience with substance abuse and how they are coping with treatment and drug education. Therapy is led by a licensed therapist or psychologist who chooses the topics and structures discussions. Here is where individuals learn that they share similar experiences and struggles. This helps them learn they are not alone.

Family Therapy

Family counseling is important because addiction does occur in a vacuum. The family unit also suffers as a result of drug abuse. This form of therapy engages the family or loved ones of any individual in substance abuse treatment. A rehab center will ask the family to discuss how their loved ones’ substance use and the adverse consequences that occurred as a result. This helps the family work through their own guilt and shame surrounding the loved ones’ substance abuse.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a therapy method that focuses on retraining destructive patterns of thinking and behaviors. The idea is that by retraining a person’s thought patterns they can ultimately change their substance abuse behavior. CBT is used by many treatment centers to help in treating substance use and mental illnesses like bipolar disorder or anxiety.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is a form of therapy that helps individuals overcome their resistance to engaging in substance abuse treatment and stopping substance use. The goal is to stoke a rapid, internal change instead of guiding a person through the treatment program. MET is often used in conjunction with other forms of therapy like CBT in inpatient treatment and outpatient programs alike.

Contingency Management

Contingency management is used in the behavioral health industry as a motivational tool that provides individuals with rewards for staying away from substance abuse behavior. To encourage the recovery process and drive healthy change, patients enrolled in this form of therapy receive rewards when they stick by thier positive goals. Examples used in a treatment facility might be patient’s clean drug test or attending therapy in a treatment program.
